social network sites

Facebook is 1 of most popular social networking site in the world; people share they thoughts, pictures and videos with each other and can keep in contact with long lost friends ETC. For new technologies to target a big and specific audience for them for example film they could advertise it on Facebook there trailer therefore attracting a big audience because a certain amount of audience members have watched this trailer and liked what they have seen.
The main features facebook have for advertising is;
• Joining groups
• Becoming fans of actor/films etc.
• Advertising on the side of facebook i.e. trailers
• What they think about films good or bad
All these key features help the film organisation attract the audience for there film; they advertise on social websites like face book because it have a wide range of different audiences and also it is the best way for a lot of people to find out about the film. This is below the line advertising because you have to sign up for facebook and you choice to go on it.
The down sides to advertising trailer which can be reviewed can be if some people do not like the film and evaluate it as really bad and boring when people look at people review they may be put off my this person comment therefore sometimes reducing the audience the film can bring in.
In my view of advertising on social networks is very good and very effective for getting the film out there and letting people know it is out; it has a big list of members therefore you have a unlimited target audience to search for so at least one person will want to go watch the film so it is always a win situation for the film company.

new technologies to target more specfic audience (text)

Text is used in everyday life and is the key factor for companies to advertise something to a target audience; using text to advertise films targets a wider range of audience for example orange Wednesdays, this advertises a buy 1 get 1 free to the audience this will draw a wider target market for orange therefore increasing there profit. Orange and cinemas are working together to advertise the film and promote orange because you can only get cinema deals with orange; this makes orange a more popular company for some audience members.
An example of orange Wednesday is;
• 2012
• Twilight
• A Christmas carol
• Paranormal activity
Orange are making films more advertise for example film companies are using orange to create a wider audience impact therefore increasing the profit for both the cinema/film and orange themselves.
But on the other hand quite a lot of people are not on orange therefore making the target audience not as much as it could be; but by them having this application when you join orange maybe more people will join orange just for the orange Wednesday’s factor.
Word of month come into play for orange as well because if a mate is talking how good orange Wednesdays are it might persuade them to change networks to get this special feature.
Word of mouth is a reference to the passing of information from person to person; this is good for orange and film because as I said above by family’s or friends recommending it, it could sway there choice of network.

Low budget films evaulate

Films - Once upon a time in the midlands
Dead mans shoes
This is england
Film stratages
• Doesn't need to be a big budget film to be a good film.
• Low budget films have a low risk in loss of money as there is not alot of money to be lost. Quite profitable.
• Low budget means have to use natural lighting, more realistic view.
• Buying cars instead of hireing them - cheaper.
• Finding a location instead of building one - cheaper. Nottingham, old fashin estates.
• Makes up the scripts with the actors to get a better and more realistic story line. The is better if the story line is really good. Its not all about the actors.
• Actors, film crew and team work together as one to have a working proccess. Come up with better ideas.
• Social realism - recreating reality of society.

working titles and warp film evaulation

Working Title and Warp Films
Institution and Audiences

1. Working title films is a production company based in England. Warp Films is sister company of Warp Record and is based in Sheffield. Warp Films is an independent company, Working Title is part of universal (conglomerate).

2.Warp Films would have less of a budget because they are completely on their own, but Working Title would have more of a budget because they have help from universal.

3.Warp Films have produced films such as: This is England, Rubber Jonny and Dead Man’s Shoes. Working Title have produced films such as: The Boat That Rocked, About a Boy, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Drop Dead Fred.

4. Warp Films are no way near as famous as Working Title the film This is England will be much less known than say Four Weddings and a Funeral, also Warp Films will not have world famous actors however Working Title will.

5. The film Chicago had a budget of £306,403,013.

6. Working Title get there funding from universal, Warp Films get it from NESTA.

7. They can’t afford to do big action styled films because they don’t have the budget so they have to stick to more realistic dramas.

8. The main appeal is that all films are social realism and the audience can relate more to the style of films they make. For example This is England is set in the 1980’s and people can relate to their life growing up and the problems they faced are realistic situations.

9.Working Title has a big target audience and tries to get people of all ages and genders to watch their films. Warp Films have a smaller target audience and is more limited to one group.

10. They mainly make big Hollywood films that well known actors star in.

• The boat that rocked: used merchandising by advertising there film on, T-Shirts, Clothing, Gifts, Key Rings, Calendars, Tour Books and sound track.

• James Bond: used merchandising by advertising there film on, Posters, monopoly, calendars, figures, games console, sound track, books, key rings, mouse mat, pens, bags, toys, wallet, watch, lighter.
James Bond has a lot of merchandising as there had a lot of funding from there film. They had a big success with there films. So promoting merchandise they advertise the film and make more profit.

Viral Marketing
• The boat that rocked: This is good for this film as it is a small budget so if the audience like it then it will get a good word and people who have watched it will advise others to watch it.
• Bridget Jones: If this film got a good rating then people would spread the word that it is good.
• James Bond: James Bond has a good reputation for being a good film so if a new film came out and it wasn’t as good as past films the it would get a bad rating by the audience. So people would spread the word its bad and not many people will go to watch it.

About Film marketing advertising

There are 2 types above the line and below the line advertising. Above the line is a advertising that you do not have to go out and search for; for example a poster, this is not what you were looking for but it is just there and is advertising whatever it is to you; therefore making it above the line advertising. Below the line is a advertising that when your doing something comes up; for example itube; you will type it whatever you want and it will come if this is a trailer etc you are looking for it so it is below the line advertising.

All these films advertise there film and try to get the public to want to come and watch it;

• 2012
• The men who stair goats
• Bunny and the bull

“2012” is a big blockbuster and have advertised there film on TV with movie trailers over 3 channels; they have also put posters up around parts of England to also attract viewers to come and watch it. As well they have put the trailers on YouTube and have been advertising it over the radio. There budget for the whole thing was $20 million. There marketing budget was $2 million for advertising it on TV, radio and poster.
“The men who stairs at goats” have advertised there film also on TV and with posters; the TV trailer is on as often or more then “2012” because they have a bigger budget then “2012” had. There budget for the whole film is $25 million. The marketing budget for this film is 2.5 million they wanted 10% to go on marketing to attract the audience in so they can get a profit on making the film.
The Bunny and the bull had a very low budget to advertise and make there whole film; there budget was $5 million for the whole film. They have only advertising the film on there website and a few posters because they had a very low budget to advertise the film compared to “2012” and “the men who stairs at goats”. There marketing budget was $500,000 which had to cover there trailer, posters ETC which is not a lot.
The marketing advertising has got more and more in the film industry on TV and radio ETC. Every year they put more and more on the budget for marketing and has much improved then how it was in the 1990’s.

Question about films budgets

question;

How does a budget of a film institution affect production practice used to appeal to the target audience?

The budget affects where you can film your production; for example if you had a small budget and you wanted to use the queens house for filming your expensives will not be able to cover that and the rest of the film. Also with out and big budget you will not be able to get established actors without using same or maybe all off your budget for the whole film. Aswell as when you a low budget you will not be able to include loads of special effects to the film; special effect ETC is quite expensive therefore if you have a low budget you will not be able to include these effects. Also

The best films to make with a low budget are realistic films; for example "This Is England" and "Dead Mans Shoes"; both these films are made to be realistic therefore saving thereselfs money and making it with in there budget because they can use comment scenes, no special effects and unestablished actors. For example "This is England" they only have 1.6million to spend on the whole film; this film was a really big hit with the audiences as they targeted it for old people as well as young people; the old people could relate to this film, and the young people just wanted to know what the old england was like. The producters of small budget films normally try to make there film to the widest audience possible therefore trying to make a wide audience and also to make a big profit from a low budget.

"Dead Men Shoes" also had a low budget; this film was filmed like this is england in common places which saved them money. The film had a unsteady camra through the whole film; this makes it look more realistic to the audince and creates what the producter wants realisim. "Dead Men Shoes" was based on drug dealers; this will bring in the young audience beause most of the young audience like violent films therefore getting these types of viewers in. As well as like "This Is England" it had unestablished actors; this adds to the realisim because they not known therefore we can belive what is going on.

Josh and Mats Magazine

This magazine follows the normal convention rules for a magazine; we used 4 pictures in are magazine which a normal magazine will have at it’s maximum; we choose to have 4 pictures because we wanted the magazine to follow these convention to make it look more professional. Also we used only 2 different font colours which a normal magazine would do also. In making are magazine we made sure we did not break any off a traditional magazines convention rules therefore are magazine did not break no conventions; we did not want to break any convention rules to fulfil are magazine to come across to the audience as professional.

We made the colours on are background red and black; we did this because are magazine needs to apply to boys and black and red is a very boyish colour therefore hopefully getting the boys attention with these colours. We made the magazine for boys in school; are catch line was “How can you work and play?” we had this next to a very famous footballer by this footballer being on are front page and this line being next to him people will want to know how? And they will buy it to found out.

These magazines are for anytime readers it does not follow a ongoing story which means you have to read the one before to understand the next one we made sure we picked a magazine which anyone can pick up and read; we did this because we where thinking about are target audience and not many children would keep buying this magazine week in week out; but by use having a complete separate magazine every week children can buy it and read it anytime they want therefore making it a bigger sales income for us the makers.

I have learnt in making this magazine cover that Photoshop is really hard to use; Are magazine is not the best but it is quite good for are 2nd practice on Photoshop. If I could improve one thing I would make the writing on the blackboard better and make it look more professional. As well as by me doing this I now know how to use Photoshop much better and these techniques I have learnt will help me through the rest of the course.

Our film

Me and Josh Media Coursework from mat armstrong on Vimeo.

Evaluation;

The film was filmed and edited like a normal show or film, it had a start and ending i.e. he was guilty. We used a wide range of camera shots in are film we used-;

• An over the shoulder shot when the inspector was looking through the window at the suspect.
• We used a low angle shot/panning when the inspector was walking across the hall way.
• We used a point of view shot when you looked through the window into were the suspect was; this showed inside the room.
• We also used a reverse shot from inside the room looking at the inspector from the suspects view.
• We used a 2 shot as well when the inspector sits down.

All the shots made the film very effective because it gave a different view for mostly each scene making it look professionally done and also makes it easier and more better viewing for the audience, this follows an typical TV show/film.

In making are film we had a lot of success filming it; we had no trouble filming this film because we planned it out perfectly before we started it. Also we made sure we had the perfect place to film with the correct amount of space and theme to go with are film. The only bad thing in filming the film was the lighting in the room; this was not how we wanted it to be therefore making a light on the actor’s faces which we did not want. In editing the film we had no trouble and all using the software and making it look professional; we found it easy to use the software we used because it was from home which means we were use to using it and we new were everything was therefore making it easier to edit.

In are film we made sure it continued a constant scene after scene continuation; we did this because if you mix the film about the audience will not know what is going on this will confuse the audience and make them not enjoy the film as much because they have to really think about what is going on; we made sure ours was easy to follow on and was entertained for the audience.

As a whole I am really happy with are film the editing was really good and professional and also the filming is top class. To be honest I don’t think we need to improve on any filming techniques or editing because we did not struggle at all and we completed the film with high standards

Magazine

Evaluation;

The magazine we did was 442. We used most of the conventions which is common on a normal magazine; we used 2 main colours and used 3-4 pictures which are common on normal magazines. We did not break any conventions to the magazine; are magazine has all the same conventions to a normal avenge magazine. The colours we used were red; we used this because 442 is a football magazine which mostly boys read and red is a common boys favourite colour, also we used grey; this is also a boys colour and hopefully by us using boys colours it would attract boys to buy the magazine. We used also yellow on some writing; we did this to make the magazine stand out and also make it eye catching for the audience so it gets there attention.

The cover lines stand out with a big 442 title in red at the top which makes boys who are looking around for a sports magazine look at it because 442 is a common term used in football. The magazine is for both new and regular readers because new readers can pick it up and just read it because it has no sequence to the magazine; but also regular people could read it because it is a magazine which is completely different every week. I have learnt when doing this magazine my way around Photoshop which I can now use very good and with no trouble; this is good because know in further tasks when we have to use Photoshop I will be able to do the task with the best of my ability and make it look professional. I know feel confident with both creating a print based product and also moving image product; I feel the same amount of confident with them both.

Eastenders

Evaluation:

This movie was a clip from Eastenders. It was a typical scene from a TV soup because it used different types of camera shots which a normal TV soap would use. Also the way the scene was set out was like a normal TV soup as well; i.e. the telephone was on the wall like a typical soup etc. We used 3 different camera angles these were; mid shot, close shot and reverse shot; we used all of these shots because these were in the real version of Eastender and by us having the same camera angels it would make it seem more realistic. The film we did was very accurate too the real version in my view; we used all the camera shots that the real version did. Also we had most of the rite lines in the scene as well this would of added how close are version is to the real version. We had a few weaknesses and strengths these were;

Strengths
• Worked really well as a team and made sure we did all the work to a high standard.
• We did all the camera shots correct and to a good standard.
• We edited it quite well with music at the start and at the end.

Weaknesses
• It took us quite long to do the camera shots therefore leaving us less time to edit it the video.
• The acting we did was not as good as we wanted it to be; so if I had to improve it I would re-take some of the bits to make it look professional.

I have learnt a little bit about mise en scene; I Know that It literally means staging. It is the way in which the elements in the film are arranged by the camera. We had 1 lighting in are film and that was from the outside; we did think a little bit about the lighting; because in the real version it was all natural light so we decided to have natural light in ours as well to make it more realistic. I have learnt as well by me doing this film that it is important to make it continues; if it is not continues nobody watching it will get what is happening in the soup. As well as soaps are all about continuity and we need to follow this rule to make it seem as close as the real version. One only thing that could have been better in are soap was the editing; we had not much time to edit it because the filming took us so long so we had to rush this therefore it was not as good as it should have been. If we had enough time to edit it properly we would have proper scene changes and the proper eastenders opening with music.
